ChatGPT is slow: what to check before you wait

A slow response can be a normal part of a complex task, or a sign that something is wrong. Check the cause first. A waiting-time extension cannot fix an outage or make the model generate faster.

Check service and task complexity

Start with the OpenAI status page. If there is an incident, retry later. If the service is healthy, consider whether your request involves research, tools, large files, or a lengthy answer. Those tasks may simply take longer than a brief question. Avoid repeatedly submitting the same task while a response is still in progress.

If the page seems stuck

OpenAI recommends trying a refresh, a new chat for a long conversation, or another browser or network. A private window can help identify whether an extension or local browser setting is interfering. If the issue repeats, follow OpenAI’s troubleshooting steps rather than assuming every delay has the same cause.

  • Check the service status.
  • Refresh or try a shorter new conversation.
  • Compare another browser or private window.
  • Test another connection if the problem persists.

What LingoWait can and cannot do

LingoWait does not alter ChatGPT, its model, servers, or generation speed. It displays a short language exercise while a response is being generated in the desktop Chrome browser. When the answer appears, the panel shrinks and you can continue reading. That makes an ordinary wait more useful without claiming to shorten it.

When to use it

Install LingoWait if ChatGPT is working normally and you want to practise during the pauses. If ChatGPT freezes, troubleshoot first. The extension is optional and can be switched off in its settings. See the official OpenAI help article for current troubleshooting instructions.

See it in action

Ask ChatGPT a question. A short language exercise appears while the response is generated. When the answer is ready, LingoWait shrinks and saves your progress.
